A Google AI Overview is the AI written summary that sits above the first ordinary result, and it appears on some local searches but not most of them. Google builds it from pages already in its index and credits a few of them. Research style searches trigger one far more often than searches with clear buying intent. Below: what actually triggers one on a local search, why it so often links a directory instead of a business, what you can practically do, and the part most guides leave out, which is how much of this is outside your control.
Where It Sits And What It Is Made Of
An AI Overview is a summary Google writes for you at the top of the results page, with links to a few of the sources it drew on. It sits above the first ordinary result, which is the part that matters commercially: it moves everything else down the page.
It is not a separate product with its own submission process. Google’s own documentation on AI features in Search is explicit that there is no special markup, no sign up and no way to opt into being cited. Pages become eligible the ordinary way, by being indexed and by ranking for the query.
The practical translation: there is no AI Overview strategy that is separate from ranking. Everything that makes a page eligible is something ordinary SEO already covers. What changes is which searches are worth competing for, and what the page has to say in its opening lines.
What Actually Triggers One On A Local Search
The single most useful thing to understand is that intent decides it, and local searches split cleanly in two.

Research searches usually trigger one
How much does landscaping cost, how do I choose a landscaper, what is the difference between two services. These are questions with an explanatory answer, and that is exactly what a summary is good at. If your buyers ask these before they call anyone, expect an AI Overview to be sitting there.
Buying searches usually do not
A service plus a town, or anything with near me in it, more often returns the map pack and ordinary results with no summary at all. Google appears to read these as wanting a business, not an explanation. That is good news, because these are the searches that produce phone calls.
It is unstable, and that is normal
The same search can produce an AI Overview one week and not the next, and two people searching identical words can see different things. Treat any single check as a snapshot, never a measurement. If you want to know whether they appear for your business, check a fixed set of searches on a fixed schedule and compare over time.
Why It Links A Directory Instead Of You
Here is the part that gets skipped, and it is the most useful thing on this page.
When an AI Overview does appear on a local search, the sources it credits are very often directories, review sites and local publishers rather than the businesses themselves. This is not a bias against small business. It is that a page listing twelve plumbers in a town genuinely answers “best plumbers near me” better than any one plumber’s home page can. The directory is a better answer to the question as asked.
The strategic consequence is unglamorous and it saves real money: being listed on the directories that already rank is usually cheaper and faster than trying to out-write them. A complete, accurate listing on a site Google already trusts puts you inside the answer. Competing head on with that directory for the same phrase can take a year and may never work.
Where your own pages do win is the specific question. Nobody out-answers you on your own service in your own town, described honestly, with real detail. That is where a page like SEO in Fort Collins or SEO in Loveland earns its place, rather than competing for the broad category term.
What Actually Helps
Everything here is worth doing whether or not an AI Overview ever appears for your searches, which is the test of whether advice is honest.
Answer the question in the opening lines
A summary quotes a passage, not a page. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under the heading, complete enough to stand on its own without the paragraph above it. This is also what earns featured snippets and what makes a page easier to read for a customer in a hurry.
Complete your Google Business Profile properly
For local questions your Google Business Profile carries a great deal of the weight, and it is the surface you most directly control. Categories, services, hours, photos and answered reviews all feed what Google believes about you.
Get onto the sources that already appear
Run your own searches, write down which directories keep getting cited, and make sure you are listed and complete on those specific ones. This is the highest return work on the list and most of it is free.
Add structured data, with correct expectations
LocalBusiness structured data states what your business is and where it works in a form Google does not have to infer. It removes guesswork. It does not make a weak page eligible and it is not a shortcut past ranking, so treat anyone selling it as an AI Overview technique with suspicion.
What Is Outside Your Control
Four things, stated plainly, because a plan built on pretending otherwise will waste your money.
Whether an AI Overview appears at all. That is Google’s call per query and it changes without notice. Which sources it credits. There is no submission, no ranking factor for inclusion and no appeal. Whether it costs you a click. When the summary fully answers the question, some people were never going to call anyone anyway, and separating those two groups in your analytics is genuinely hard. Whether any of it holds still. This surface has changed repeatedly and will keep changing.
You can limit how your content is used in previews with directives such as nosnippet and max-snippet. It is worth knowing this exists, and it is usually a bad trade: the same controls remove your ordinary search snippets, which almost always costs more traffic than the AI Overview does.
The steady conclusion. Compete hardest for the searches that still convert, which are the buying searches where an AI Overview is least likely to appear. Be listed where the answers are drawn from. Answer questions properly on your own pages. None of that is at risk from the next change to this feature, which is exactly why it is what we recommend.
Questions We Get Asked About AI Overviews
What is a Google AI Overview?
It is the AI written summary that appears at the top of some Google results, above the first ordinary link. Google assembles it from pages already in its index and shows links to a handful of the sources it used. It does not appear on every search, and what it shows can differ between two people searching the same words.
Do AI Overviews appear on local searches?
Sometimes, and less often than on general questions. Searches that read as research, like how much a service costs or how to choose a contractor, are far more likely to produce one than a search with obvious buying intent. A search for a service plus a town often returns the map pack and ordinary results with no AI Overview at all.
Why does the AI Overview link to directories instead of my business?
Because a directory page usually answers the broad question better than any single business does. A page listing twelve plumbers in a town is a more direct answer to “best plumbers near me” than one plumber’s home page. This is why being listed on the directories that already rank is often cheaper than trying to out-write them.
Can I stop my site appearing in an AI Overview?
Partly, and it is usually a bad trade. Google offers controls such as the nosnippet and max-snippet directives that limit how your content can be used in previews and summaries. Applying them broadly also removes your normal search snippets, which typically costs more traffic than the AI Overview does.
Does structured data get me into an AI Overview?
No, and anyone promising that is overselling it. Structured data tells Google what a page and a business are in a form it does not have to guess at, which makes a page easier to use and quote correctly. It does not make a weak page eligible, and it is not a route past ranking.
Are AI Overviews reducing clicks to small business websites?
For some searches, yes. When the summary answers the question completely there is less reason to click anything. The practical response is to compete for the searches that still convert, which are the ones with buying intent where an AI Overview is least likely to appear, and to make sure your Google Business Profile carries the answer when it does.
