AI visibility is whether AI powered answers name your business when someone describes a problem you solve. It covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. You cannot buy a place in any of them. What you can do is make the evidence easy to find, easy to read and consistent everywhere it appears. Telos Creative is a marketing agency in Windsor, Colorado.
This is the guide we wish had existed when clients started asking. Below: the three surfaces you can now be found on and how they differ, where these tools actually look, what moves the needle in rough order of effect, how to tell whether any of it is working, and a straight account of what nobody can promise you.
Three Places You Can Be Found Now, Not One
Being found used to mean one thing: rank on Google. There are now three surfaces, they work differently, and a business can do well on one and be invisible on another.
Ordinary search results and the map pack
This is still where most inquiries come from for most local businesses, and it is the surface that has been studied for twenty years. Google names the three things that decide local results plainly: relevance, distance and prominence. Nothing about AI has made this less important. Anyone telling you to move budget out of it is selling the new thing rather than advising you.
Google’s own AI answers
AI Overviews and AI Mode sit above the ordinary results and answer the question directly, citing a handful of sources. Google describes the mechanism as a query fan out: it runs several related searches behind the scenes and assembles an answer from what comes back. That is why the sources credited are often not the pages that rank first for the original phrase. We go into this surface in detail in Google AI Overviews for local business.
Assistants people ask directly
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity are a different situation again. There is no results page and no position. Someone asks for a recommendation and gets a short list, usually of three or four names, with no obvious way to see why those and not others. This is the surface where local businesses are weakest, and the reason is specific rather than mysterious. We cover it in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Where These Tools Actually Get Their Answers

Four sources, and only one of them is your website. That imbalance is the single most useful thing to understand about this whole subject.
Your own pages
They have to be reachable, indexed and allowed to show a snippet. A page that is blocked, unlinked or absent from the index cannot be quoted by anything, no matter how good it is. This is the floor, not the goal.
Your Google Business Profile
For anything with a location or a service area, the profile carries more weight than most owners expect. It is a structured, verified statement of what you do and where, which is exactly the kind of source a machine prefers over prose it has to interpret.
Third party lists and directories
This is the uncomfortable one. Ask an assistant for the best landscaper in a given town and you will often get a directory page, a “top ten” roundup or a review site rather than any landscaper’s own website. That is a reasonable answer to the question, because a page comparing twelve providers genuinely does answer “who does this near me” better than one provider’s sales page. Arguing with it is a waste of energy. Being present and accurate on those lists is not.
Reviews and what other people wrote about you
Volume, recency and what the text actually says all feed in. Google states directly that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and the wording inside reviews is also plain language evidence about what you do and where you do it, which is precisely what a language model is good at reading.
The pattern worth noticing: three of the four sources are not your website. Most of what decides whether you get named lives on property you do not control. That is why an AI visibility plan built only of blog posts underperforms, and why we pair this work with directory listings and video rather than running it on its own.
What Actually Moves The Needle, In Rough Order
Ordered by how much difference it makes for a typical local business, most first. The order matters more than the list, because the expensive items are near the bottom.
1. Be reachable and indexed
Nothing below this line counts if a crawler cannot get to the page. Check it before spending money on anything else. Our free audit runs this part automatically against your live site.
2. Get the basics of the profile right and keep them right
Correct categories, real hours, a service area that matches where you actually go, and the same name, address and phone number everywhere. Inconsistency here does more quiet damage than almost anything else, because it makes every source disagree slightly and none of them trustworthy.
3. Make each page answer one question, near the top
An AI tool quotes a passage, not a page, and the passage gets lifted away from everything around it. So it has to make sense alone. One page, one question, answered in the first two sentences, with the business, the service and the place named inside the sentence rather than left to a pronoun. This is the cheapest item on the list and close to the most effective. Make your website AI readable covers the mechanics.
4. Be on the lists these tools already trust
Industry directories, local chambers, the review platforms that serve your trade. This is unglamorous, it is mostly form filling, and it is frequently what separates two otherwise similar businesses.
5. Ask for reviews, consistently, and reply to them
A steady trickle beats a burst. Replying matters as well, both because it is read by humans and because it adds text about what you did.
6. Structured data, once, done properly
Correct LocalBusiness markup removes guesswork about who and where you are. It is worth doing and it is not worth paying for twice. Google is explicit that no special markup is needed for these AI features, so anyone selling schema as an AI visibility product is overselling it.
7. Publish things worth citing
Slowest to pay off, and still worth doing, because it is the only item that compounds. Pages that answer a real question honestly get quoted; pages written to hit a word count do not.
How To Tell Whether Any Of It Is Working
This is where most of the nonsense in this field lives, so here is what is genuinely measurable and what is not.
What you can measure properly
Search Console still shows impressions and clicks, including for pages that appear inside AI answers. Your analytics will show referrals from the assistant domains when someone follows a link out of a chat. Your Business Profile reports how people found you and what they did next. Calls and form fills remain the only numbers that matter commercially, and they are the ones to hold everything else against.
What you can check by hand
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, write down what comes back, and repeat it monthly. It is crude and it is the most honest picture available. Do it in a fresh session, because a chat that already knows you will flatter you.
What cannot be measured, whatever a dashboard suggests
There is no rank for a generated answer. Two people asking the same question at the same moment can get different names. The same question next month can return something else again because the model or its sources changed. Any report that shows a smooth AI visibility score climbing week on week is showing you a made up number. We would rather show a client a smaller set of figures that are real.
The honest measurement position: track the inputs you control and the outcomes you care about, and treat everything in between as directional. Inquiries up with the inputs improving is a good sign. A proprietary score with no stated method is not evidence of anything.
What Nobody Can Promise You
If you take one section from this page, take this one, because it is the part that will save you money.
Nobody can guarantee you a place in an AI answer
Not us, not anyone. These systems are not open to purchase or persuasion, and Google says the same about ordinary local results: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A guarantee in this field is either a misunderstanding or a sales tactic.
There is no secret file or tag that unlocks it
Google’s documentation is unusually direct here: you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features. If an AI visibility package has a special file as its centrepiece, that tells you something about the rest of the package.
The ground moves
Every one of these products has changed substantially in the last year and will change again. Anything built to exploit a quirk of how one of them works today is a poor investment. Work that makes your business genuinely easier to find and easier to verify survives the changes, which is the main argument for doing the boring things well.
And it is still a supporting act
For most local businesses in Northern Colorado, ordinary search and the map pack still bring in the work. We would not advise anyone to move budget out of what is producing inquiries in order to chase this. Treat it as one more surface, get the foundations right so you qualify for it, and keep your attention on the phone ringing.

Questions We Get Asked About AI Visibility
What is AI visibility for a local business?
It is whether AI powered answers name your business when someone describes a need you can meet. That covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. It is related to search rankings but it is not the same thing, because these tools write an answer and then decide which sources to credit, rather than listing ten results in order.
Do I need to do anything special to appear in Google’s AI Overviews?
No. Google’s own documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations necessary, and that you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files or markup. The work that makes a page eligible is the ordinary work: it can be crawled, it is genuinely useful, and it is allowed to show a snippet.
Can an agency guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No, and an agency that offers to is telling you something useful about itself. Nobody controls what these systems say. Answers vary between users, between sessions and over time, and the companies running them change how they work without notice. What can be influenced is whether the evidence exists for you to be named at all.
Is AI visibility replacing Google rankings?
Not replacing, adding. Ordinary search results and the local map pack still send most of the inquiries for most local businesses. AI answers are a newer surface that sits alongside them and increasingly above them on the page. The sensible position is to treat it as one more place to be found rather than as a reason to stop doing the things that already work.
Why do AI tools keep recommending directories instead of actual businesses?
Because a page that lists twelve providers in your town is a more direct answer to “who does this near me” than any single provider’s own website. That is not a flaw you can argue with. The practical response is to be present and accurate on the lists these tools already lean on, rather than hoping to displace them.
How long does this take to show any change?
Changes to your own site and profile can be picked up within days once they are crawled. Being named in generated answers is slower and much less predictable, because it depends on evidence accumulating across sources you do not own. Treat anything under a few months as too early to judge, and be skeptical of anyone reporting a clean before and after inside a few weeks.
